Removable Dentures

Removable dentures are prosthetic devices used to replace missing teeth and surrounding tissue, offering a solution for patients who have lost all or some of their natural teeth. These custom-made appliances consist of artificial teeth attached to a gum-colored acrylic base that sits over the gums. Removable dentures are designed to closely resemble natural teeth and gums, restoring the appearance and function of the smile. They are held in place by natural suction, dental adhesives, or metal clasps that attach to remaining natural teeth.

Complete dentures are designed to replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower dental arch, or both. They are typically made of acrylic and rest directly on the gums, providing support for the lips and cheeks while restoring chewing function and speech clarity. Complete dentures can greatly improve the quality of life for individuals who have lost all of their natural teeth.

Partial dentures, on the other hand, are used when some natural teeth remain in the dental arch. They are designed to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth and are attached to the remaining natural teeth using metal clasps or precision attachments. Partial dentures can be made from various materials, including metal or flexible acrylic resin (known as flexible or "flexys" dentures), offering different benefits and aesthetics.

Metal partial dentures are typically made from a combination of metal and acrylic, providing excellent strength and durability. They are less bulky than acrylic dentures and offer a secure fit due to the metal clasps that attach to the remaining natural teeth. Metal partial dentures are an ideal option for patients who require a stable and long-lasting tooth replacement solution.

Flexible dentures, also known as "flexys" dentures, are made from a flexible thermoplastic material that conforms to the shape of the gums for a comfortable and snug fit. They are lightweight, hypoallergenic, and more aesthetically pleasing than traditional metal dentures. Flexible dentures eliminate the need for metal clasps, providing a discreet and natural-looking tooth replacement option.

Immediate dentures are another type of removable denture that is placed immediately after the extraction of remaining teeth. These dentures are pre-made before the teeth are removed, allowing patients to have a complete smile during the healing process. While immediate dentures provide immediate tooth replacement, they may require adjustments as the gums heal and shrink over time. Despite the need for adjustments, immediate dentures offer the advantage of preserving facial structure and supporting the healing process by shielding sensitive tissues. However, patients may experience challenges such as discomfort and difficulty with adaptation during the initial phase.
